Beijing, Taiwan. Mei Yiqi, the son of a salt administration official, was born in Tianjin in 1889. After studying at Zhang Boling’s Middle School in Nanjing, he won a Boxer Indemnity scholarship in 1909. He studied electrical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts.
On the day that President Mei Yiqi left Tsinghua University, he met Professor Wu Zelin at the gate of the school. Professor Wu asked him if he was going to leave. Mei Yiqi replied: “I must leave. I am leaving to protect Tsinghua’s fund. If I don’t leave, I will have no way to protect this fund.”.
