Biography Football player Mel Blount was born on April 10, 1948 in Vidalia, Georgia to Alice Sharpe Blount and James Blount. A natural athlete, Blount excelled in football, baseball and track at Lyons High School. He graduated in 1966, and received an athletic scholarship to attend Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Blount, Mel Biography. Mel Blount was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 1989. Blount was also an inaugural member of the Steelers Hall of Honor as a member of the Class of 2017. There aren't many players who cause the NFL to change the rules because of their play, but there also weren't many players like Blount.
Blount, the Steelers third round draft pick in 1970 out of Southern University, came into the NFL with everything a coach would want…size, speed, quickness, mental and physical toughness and a work ethic that came from growing up working on a farm in Valdosta, Georgia.
