It’s simply an arch, over a busy road, in the bad part of Modesto that says “water, wealth, contentment, health“ just south of 9th street, near the old train station. This area has real prostitution/crime problems at night with street waking hookers and meth users.
Unique, both loved and reviled, the Modesto Arch almost met the fate of other city landmarks in the 1960s when a proposal was floated to remove it. Citizens were not pleased and the Arch remained across I Street as an icon of the once active downtown core. There will always be those who are skeptical of its worth.
The Modesto Arch has been around forever and a day. It's message is simple and captures the feeling of Modesto a century ago. For historic purposes, it's one of the few landmarks that Modesto has preserved. No particular reason to stop and gawk. Just admire it as you drive under.
