Schedule & Fares. For 2023, our regularly scheduled passenger train ride operations will be the second and third weekend (Saturday and Sunday) of each month from March through October. Steam and diesel power will vary by the day and the month.
The Train of Lights offers a rare opportunity to experience a train ride through Niles Canyon at night. With one departure from Niles at dusk and a second departure from Sunol after dark, you can choose your favorite time to ride.

National Register of Historic Places. The Niles Canyon Transcontinental Railroad Historic District is made up of the 11 mile-long section of the First Transcontinental Railroad that passes through Niles Canyon between the towns of Sunol and Fremont (Niles), north of San Jose, California.
The schedules vary depending on the season and what train rides (train - steam, diesel) and the accompanying number of cars. Departures usually run in the ~30 minutes time period with a 15-20 minute overlay at the station, and return departure. See the Niles Canyon Railway website for further times and schedules.
