Founded by Edward Murphy and Alanson Brush in Oakland County, Michigan, the company operated independently until 1909, when the passing of Edward Murphy led to the acquisition of Oakland by General Motors.

August 28, 1907, the Oakland Motor Car Company was founded. There was a buggy type runabout called Pontiac in 1907 and 1908 built by the Pontiac Spring & Wagon Works. A Pontiac Motor Car Co. was organized in 1906 to build a combination commercial and pleasure vehicle.
The Oakland Motor Car Company officially began production in 1908 with the first car, a Model A, rolling off the assembly line in April of that year. Five models were offered the first year with prices ranging from $1,300 for the Model A runabout to $2,150 for the Model E four passenger landaulet. First year production was approximately 278 cars.
