The Old Idaho Penitentiary State Historic Site was a functional prison from 1872 to 1973 in the western United States, east of Boise, Idaho. The first building, also known as the Territorial Prison , was constructed in the Territory of Idaho in 1870; the territory was seven years old when the prison was built, a full two decades before statehood.

Idaho State Penitentiary is another prison on the long list of America’s most haunted prisons. There have been many accounts of various paranormal and unusual happenings in the prison grounds. However, 5 House, were Snowden (Idaho’s Jack the Ripper) was executed is said to be the most haunted and most active of all the rooms in the castle.
It also was used as the site for 6 of the ten people executed at the Old Idaho State Penitentiary between 1901 and 1926. Wooden gallows were constructed in the northeast corner of the prison yard, directly behind the New Cell House.
