Bonn, Germany The oldest settlement known by the name of Bonn was a river crossing discovered by Roman legionnaires in the 1st century bce. The settlement itself probably disappeared soon afterward, but its name was continued in Castra Bonnensia, a fortress built by the Romans in the 1st century ce.
