Point Dume is a perfect place to watch for California gray whales during the December to mid April migration period. Point Dume Nature Preserve At the end of Westward Beach Road, access to Point Dume Nature Preserve begins from the cul-de-sac. A gradual ascending trail leads to an ancient coastal bluff sand dune.
Point Dume SMR, which covers more than 7½ square miles off the tip of Point Dume, extends to depths of nearly 2,000 feet. The SMR protects an expanse of sandy beach, rocky shores, kelp forests, surfgrass beds, an upwelling zone, and nearly two square miles of deep submarine canyon.
VISIT POINT DUME BEACH. Point Dume has over one mile of ocean frontage with 34 acres of sand. It is surrounded by headlands, cliffs, rocky coves, and vast beach access. Amenities include restrooms, showers, restaurants, 373 parking spaces, and a hiking trail.

You will get to see rock climbers working their way up the side of the cliff, and this is the perfect spot to watch whales as they migrate during the winter season. From the parking lot, make your way towards Point Dume.
