The Kresge family has consistently provided guidance and inspiration to the foundation since its inception. During his father’s 42-year tenure on the foundation board, Stanley S. Kresge became a trustee and vice president in 1930, and assumed the chairmanship after Mr. Kresge’s passing.

Kresge, founded in 1899, was a Detroit-born dime store where shoppers could find daily needs such as housewares, linens, clothing, school supplies, and toys. Sebastian Spering Kresge began his dime store career as a partner of J.G. McCrory, owner of a dime store chain. The two opened stores in Detroit and Memphis.

S. S. Kresge, the founder of the company that would become Kmart, met variety-store pioneer Frank Winfield Woolworth while working as a traveling salesman and selling to all 19 of Woolworth's stores at the time. In 1897, Kresge invested $6,700 saved from his job into a five-and-dime store in Memphis, Tennessee.

S. Kresge Co., the brainchild of Sebastion Spering Kresge born 1867, Bald Mount Pa opened his first Five & Dime at Detroit Michigan with then partner Charles J Wilson and by 1912, had incorporated and grown to 85 stores. By 1929 and the start of the depression, Kresge expanded into Canada.
