Cook was an undergraduate at the University of Michigan and earned his PhD in mathematics at Harvard in 1966; his dissertation, on the computational complexity of multiplication, improved an essential algorithm now known as Toom-Cook multiplication.
The theorem is named after Stephen Cook and Leonid Levin. An important consequence of this theorem is that if there exists a deterministic polynomial-time algorithm for solving Boolean satisfiability, then every NP problem can be solved by a deterministic polynomial-time algorithm.
