Wednesday, July 7, 2021. Construction on the 20-acre Wild Rivers Water Park at the Orange County Great Park began July 7 and may and may open as early as summer of 2022. In April 2020, the Irvine City Council approved a location and lease for the water park. In November, the Irvine Planning Commission voted unanimously to approve the conditional use permit for the project at the southeast corner of Great Park Boulevard and Skyhawk.
A new water park was planned to be built on public land near the Orange County Great Park, and was scheduled to open to the public in May 2014. New water park at the Orange County Great Park History. Since 2012, there had been attempts to redevelop Wild Rivers on or near the Orange County Great Park. A new Wild Rivers park was originally slated to open in May 2014, but it was then delayed a year later to May 2015 before it was cancelled altogether due to financial and land approval issues.
