The William Oxley Thompson Memorial Library (commonly referred to as the Thompson Library) is the main library at Ohio State University's Columbus campus. Thompson was educated at Muskingum College and Western Theological Seminary. An ordained minister, Thompson spent the first half of his career in Presbyterian ministry.
William Oxley Thompson was born in Cambridge, Ohio, on November 5, 1855. In 1878, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio, and a master's degree from the same institution in 1881. He then enrolled in the Western Theological Seminary in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania.

It was officially named the William Oxley Thompson Memorial Library in 1951 in honor of the fifth president of the university. Dedication ceremonies included a lecture by Luther Evans (Librarian of Congress), a band concert, and tours of the library’s new stack tower.
