AOL has changed a lot over the years, and focuses much more on content now than internet service. A free AOL account gives you access to web-based email and a variety of online news and entertainment content. You can also use the AOL Instant Messenger service. If you want to connect to the internet through dial-up, you can still do that too.
Search your computer for a file called (your AOL screen name).abi. If your screen name is myscreenname, for example, search for a file called myscreenname.abi. This is by far the easiest way to access your email account from another computer. Mail to Web services, like mail2web.com, are not like web-based e-mail accounts. Instead they relay the unreceived messages from your server to a computer other than your own so you can access your mail from anywhere in world.
When entering your account info, make sure that you use your full email address, including @aol.com. Also, ensure that SSL encryption is enabled for both incoming and outgoing mail. Outlook kept asking for password, I entered it, it stated that the username and password was all wrong. It's not. If I go on to AOL.com, I can log in just fine. I've set the account settings to incoming - pop.aol.com, 995, SSL, outgoing - smtp.aol.com, 465, SSL using the proper login account name and password. Again, this all works through AOL.
